about

The K.E.E.N.E brothers from Panama have been busy for the last 2 years making multiple releases on their own Cacao Label and travelling the world DJing. Their first release on connected was Lust with Tigerskin and Elli which included the massive David Mayer remix. Their return record brings them to an inspiration from their native Panamanian folk lore, ‘Goroboteando alsón del Tambor’ meaning in Portobelo’s Congo dialect -Dancing to the beat of life . The Congo Dance of Panama is the most unique and colorful manifestation of folklore in the province of Colon. The dance has its roots in Africa and came to Panama by way of escaped former slaves known as “Cimarrons”. The Congo is not just a dance, but is also a form of expression by which the “Cimarrons” convey their feelings of anger, pain and joy. It was also a way to strengthen their spirit. The dance tells a story, as the characters acting out a fight with the devil who is said to be loose during the Carnival. At the end they are saved by the “Reina Conga” (the Queen of Congos), helped by “Pajarito” (little bird) and “Juan de Dios” (John God). The Congo Dance represents a fusion between their Colonial past and their African culture.

1. Goroboteando - A driving Afro Panamanian carnival percussive beat and chant ,with dusty piano stabs and flourishes . It’s a rattling groove with bass synth surges that rise in intensity until the piano breakdown that oozes tragedy invoking a spiritual event with relentless fire.

2. Chartlot – is perhaps the wind down from the main event with driving toms and eerie synth sequences and drones and a spoken word voice providing guidance to the hypnotics.

3. Goroboteando (Stereo Mc’s Remix)
A stripped back electronic interpretation with a rising synth/drum and percussion groove and music box style arpeggio break down.
